Go you!

You’ve signed up for your first big fitness feat. Is it a triathlon, marathon, or long-distance swim? Maybe you’re gearing up for this year’s footy season, a surf competition, or a major hike in New Zealand to tick a bucket list item off? You’re excited, I’m excited, and you are ready, motivated, and looking forward to training.

But let’s be honest… what comes to mind when you think about preparing?

Endless running? More time in the water? Drills until your lungs burn?

However, one thing about fitness that hasn’t changed in the last few years is that athletes still continue to shy away from strength training! Even if they are fitness enthusiasts, weekend amateur athletes, or ball-court specialists. Many still think that conditioning is the key, believing that the better they are at their skill, the better they’ll perform.

However, they forget that being strong is the best way to be well-rounded, resilient, and less likely to get injured! So if you’re going to play sport, do sport, or just be fit enough to run after your kids, you must focus on strength training and stop relying only on the ‘cardio’ elements or match fitness.

The solid truth is that if you don’t prioritise strength training, you’re leaving performance on the table and setting yourself up for possible injury very early on.

Take a look at the best athletes in the world. LeBron James? Deadlifts and heavy squats. Eliud Kipchoge, the most excellent marathon runner? Strength training is a non-negotiable part of his routine. Even Olympic swimmers spend serious time under the barbell.

Why? Because a strong athlete is a fit athlete, a fast athlete, and an unbreakable athlete.

Strength training isn’t just about lifting heavy weights; it’s about making sure your body can handle the demands of your sport without breaking down. When you build strength, you improve:

  • Power – With every stride, stroke, or jump, you generate more force.
  • Endurance – Stronger muscles fatigue slower, meaning you last longer.
  • Injury Resilience – Strong joints, tendons, and muscles reduce your risk of ACL tears, tendonitis, and stress fractures.
  • Speed & Agility – Stronger legs push off the ground harder and react faster.

Let’s take a real example: Michael Jordan. Those over the age of 30 and the most fragile at this point will understand.

In the 1980s, Jordan was undeniably talented, but he kept getting pushed around by stronger defenders. He was fast, agile, and had crazy endurance but lacked the raw strength to dominate. The same happened to Kobe and again with Lebron James.

So what did he do? He hit the weights. Hard!

By the time the ’90s rolled around, Jordan wasn’t just fast; he was a physical powerhouse. He was strong enough to take hits, explosive enough to out-jump his competition, and conditioned to go all four quarters without slowing down.

That’s the difference between being good and being great.

The same applies to you. Whether you’re preparing for your first marathon, an ultra-endurance event, or a season of amateur sports, prioritising strength training is the game-changer you need.

At VSC, we don’t train you like a casual gym-goer. We train you like an athlete.

Our programming isn’t about random workouts—it’s about progressive, structured strength training that directly translates into better performance, no matter your sport or goal.

  • Squats & Deadlifts to build full-body strength and power.
  • Olympic Lifts for explosiveness and speed.
  • Gymnastics & Midline Work for core control and durability.
  • Conditioning That Supports Strength—not the other way around.

We don’t just want you to finish your race, season, or event. We want you to dominate it. To feel unstoppable, to push past your limits, and to know that your body won’t quit on you when it matters most.

How you prepare can make the difference between struggling through your event and crushing it. It’s time to take control, build strength, and train to be unbreakable.

You already have the drive. Now, it’s about making the right choices.

At VSC, we’ll give you the tools, the programming, and the support to help you build the strength that carries you through every challenge ahead. But in the end, it’s up to you.

So, what’s it going to be?
